Halloween Writing Competition

Each October, students grades 3-12 attending Murray schools or residing within Murray City are invited to submit Halloween-themed poems, limericks, and short stories. Winners are invited to read their stories at the Haunted Tales event at the Murray City Library.

The contest is open to students grades 3-12 attending public school in Murray, or residing within Murray City boundaries. All student entries must include the student's name, grade, school, and home phone number. All entries for the 2017 Competition must be received (not postmarked) at the Murray Parks Office by Tuesday, October 17, before 5pm. Entries may be dropped off or mailed to Murray Arts, 296 East Murray Park Ave, Murray, UT 84107.

Entries should be Halloween related! Categories include short stories and poetry. Entries must be typed or legibly handwritten on 8.5x11-inch paper. Length limited to 2 typewritten pages or 6-10 handwritten pages, depending on the size of print. Entries should take no more than 4 minutes to read.

Judging will be based on creativity and grade-level writing skills, and entries will be evaluated for introduction, continuity, descriptive language, and conclusion. Bonus points will be given for presentation -- such as title, grammar, and neatness. Happy writing!
