How to Become a Firefighter
To apply to become a firefighter in Murray City, you must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Hold a current Emergency Medical Technical (EMT) certification for the state of Utah
It is helpful to have other fire-related training as well. Utah Valley State College offers a fire science program as well as a paramedic training program. Preference points are given for paramedic certification (Utah) and firefighter certification.
To be placed on the hiring roster, you must pass a Firefighter exam and a physical agility test. Usually the top 50-60 scores from the written test are invited to participate in the physical agility portion. The physical agility test is a pass/fail. The candidates who pass the physical agility test are placed on a hiring roster based on their test scores. These tests are generally given every two years.
Occasionally we have openings specifically for certified paramedics. If we are recruiting paramedics, a separate roster will be developed. In that case, a job posting and application process separate from the firefighter entry level roster will be established.
