SOCCER BALL BASICS
A proper sized soccer ball is a must for every player. Soccer balls usually come in three different sizes:
- Size 3 balls are the smallest balls and are generally used for children under the age of 8.
- These balls are generally 23-24 inches in circumference and weigh between 11-12 ounces.
- Size 4 balls are used for players between the ages of 8-12.
- These balls weigh between 12-13 ounces and have a circumference of 25-26 inches.
- This is the international standard match ball for all ages 13 and older, including all adult play.
- The size 5 ball weighs between 14-16 ounces with a circumference of 27-28 inches.

SAFETY must be the top priority for referees at all levels, so players can not use equipment or wear anything that is considered dangerous to that player or any other player.
- Hair clips
Under the Laws of the Game, jewelry is not permitted and this is typically reinforced by the local rules of competition. Covering jewelry with tape does not mean that it is safe for play.
The only potential jewelry exception would for items that are of medical or religious nature, but even they must be deemed safe for play by the referee. This includes any kind of jewelry or any other item the referee deems unsafe. An example would be a medical alert bracelet, which could be taped to the player’s wrist, or a medical alert necklace taped to the inside of the player’s uniform.
