How to Become a Firefighter

Requirements

  • To apply to become a firefighter in Murray City, you must:
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a current Emergency Medical Technical (EMT) certification for the state of Utah or be enrolled in an EMT class
  • Hold a Pro Board Accredited Fire I, Fire II, and Hazmat Ops Class or be enrolled in an approved recruit academy.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license

Hiring Roster

To be placed on the hiring roster, you must pass a firefighter written exam and a physical agility test. Usually the top 50 to 60 scores from the written test are invited to participate in the physical agility portion. The physical agility test is a pass/fail. The candidates who pass the physical agility test are placed on a hiring roster based on their test scores. These tests are generally given annually. The written test is typically a general aptitude test.
